The Saffron Walden diving club was founded in 1987 and is part of the wider national British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) organisation (www.bsac.com). The club currently has around 30 members but we have had just over 100 members at our peak. We estimate that over 500 local people have been a part of the club over the years and many more have come and done taster / try dive sessions with us. We meet every Tuesday night; training in the pool followed by a social get-together to plan diving trips to the coast. We also have our own boat which we use for short trips to the coast and a compressor for filling cylinders and mixing our own NITROX. BSAC as an organisation is very active in various marine conservation projects some of which our members have taken part in.
The club has several senior instructors including a national level instructor as well a many assistant instructors. We generally run one beginner's and one more advanced training course each year along with about 10 diving taster sessions. Some of these taster sessions are for other local groups such as the Scouts and Guides, the Young Farmers, the Round Table and Duke of Edinburgh participants. All our training is done by volunteer instructors; the only charges to students and try divers are to help cover the cost of maintaining the equipment and using the pool. We also run development courses focused on important lifesaving and first aid skills.
The club has always been active in the community helping out with many local charity events; we have close links to the Round Table and help out at events they organise. We also help out with local sporting events such as the Mucky Races which is a popular event for local sports enthusiasts.
Saffron Walden Dive Club was formed in 1987, when a handful of divers who were then members of Newmarket BSAC decided that they wanted to form their own club in Saffron Walden. From an initial small membership, more people gradually joined and they acquired “Walden Diver” our rigid inflatable dive boat for the club in 1994. Since then the club has become well established and continues to offer fun and adventure to all who want it! The club has members of all ages and runs regular training and trips in the UK as well as our regular Tuesday night social gathering so there is something for everyone!
